Susan Malmstrom earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a specialization in Printmaking at California State University, Long Beach; and was awarded a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from the University of California at Irvine.
Her work originally consisted of still life images created using antique processes from the earliest days of photography, such as Vandyke and salted paper printing. Although her images are now created digitally, the work remains faithful to transforming real objects existing in time and space into non-reality based, allegorical imagery exploring personal and collective memory.
Since 2011, she has also been installing her cabinet of curiosities, The Repository of Wonders, whenever and wherever possible; including a recent pop-up version at the Pacific Aquarium in Long Beach.
After living for ten years in Nova Scotia, Canada, Malmstrom returned to Southern California in 2015. She now works and resides in Pasadena.
